Overview

About this property

Vikram Vintage Inn is a boutique hotel in Mallital, Nainital, close to the High Court and a short way from Mall Road. Its own site calls it a place with heritage value and modern comforts, and that mix shows in the building: an older style outside, with rooms that are done up in a clean, current way inside. It is a good pick if you want to stay near the lake and the Mall without staying right on top of them.

The hotel's own site says the main-block rooms are built around an atrium lobby, with views of the mountains and valleys. That lobby shape matters on a hill-station stay. It gives the hotel a shared, open centre, and it means you are not walking down long, closed corridors to reach your room. The hotel's own guest comments on its homepage also talk about rooms with sit-out areas and mountain views, and about staff who help with small requests.

Vikram Vintage Inn suits families and couples who want a calm base in Nainital. The rooms range from simple Superior Rooms to two-bedroom suites and heritage cottages, so a family can stay together in one unit instead of booking two rooms. The hotel also has a conference hall, so it suits small work groups and private functions as well.

One practical point is worth noting before you book. The hotel sits in Mallital, near the High Court, and its own site says it is close to key attractions and scenic spots. Mall Road and the lake are a short drive away, not a walk from the door. If you want to step out straight onto the Mall, this is not that hotel. If you want a quieter stay a short drive from it, this one fits well.

Rooms

Rooms, suites and heritage cottages

The hotel's own accommodation page lists four kinds of stay: rooms, suites and heritage cottages. The rooms are Superior Rooms and Premium Rooms. The Superior Room is the simple pick, with a private attached bathroom, premium bedding, soft linen, an LED television, a hospitality tray and WiFi. The hotel's own room page says some Superior Rooms have bay windows, while others have private balconies with views of the hotel deck or the hills around.

The Premium Room is the step up from the Superior Room. The hotel's own page says it has mountain views and a peaceful, private setting, and it suits travellers who want to unwind and rest. If a view matters to you, the Premium Room is the safer pick, since the Superior Room's view depends on which room you get.

The suites suit guests who want more space. The One Bedroom Suite has a separate living area, so you can sit and read without sitting on the bed. The Two Bedroom Suite suits families or small groups, with two bedrooms and a layout that lets everyone stay together and still have their own space. The hotel's own page says the Two Bedroom Suite is family friendly, and that is the main reason to pick it.

The heritage cottages are the third kind of stay. The hotel lists a One Bedroom Heritage Cottage, a Two Bedroom Heritage Cottage, and a Two Bedroom Heritage Cottage with a sit-out area. The one-bedroom cottage suits couples who want a private, peaceful setting. The two-bedroom cottage suits families. The sit-out version adds a private outdoor seat, which is worth having in Nainital, where mornings and evenings are best spent outside. Room types and prices change with the season, so the hotel's own website will have the latest list. We do not show prices here because they change often, and we do not want to show you an old price.

Food & drink

Where to eat

Seasons Restaurant is the hotel's main dining room. The hotel's own dining page says it serves Indian, Continental and local dishes, for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian guests, and that it works for a relaxed breakfast, a buffet meal, or dinner after a day out. It is an indoor room, and it suits families, couples and small groups who want one reliable place to eat through the day.

The Outdoor Deck is the second place to eat. The hotel's own page says it offers open-air dining in a calm outdoor setting, with fresh mountain air and views around. It suits breakfast in the morning or dinner in the evening after visiting nearby spots like Snow View Point and Tiffin Top. If the weather is good, the Deck is the better pick. If it is cold or raining, Seasons is the safer one.

The Vintage Bar is the third venue. The hotel's own site says it is a lobby-level venue with an open veranda, for time with friends and family. It is the evening option, after dinner or instead of a full meal. In-room dining is also on offer, so you can eat in your room or suite if you do not want to go out.

Outside the hotel, Mall Road and the lake area have bakeries, cafes and restaurants, and the hotel's own dining page says Seasons is close to Mall Road and Bara Bazaar. For the latest menus and meal timings at the hotel's own venues, the hotel's website is the right place to check, since timings can change with the season.

Things to do

A day of lake, viewpoints and quiet evenings

A good day at Vikram Vintage Inn starts with the lake. Naini Lake is the centre of Nainital, and boating on it in the morning is the classic first activity, when the water is calm and the town is still waking up. Naina Devi Temple sits on the north shore of the lake, and it is an easy stop in the same morning trip.

After the lake, walk the Mall Road. It is the town's main promenade of shops and eateries, and the bakery stop for cake and pastries is part of the Nainital habit. The Tibetan Market is also on the Mall side, and it is worth a look for shawls and woollen clothes. If you have children with you, Eco Cave Garden is a fun stop, with caves to walk through.

In the afternoon, the viewpoints above town fill the day. Snow View Point and Tiffin Top are the two names the hotel's own dining page mentions, and both give wide views over the town and the hills. The hotel's own site also mentions treks, boating and horse riding on request, so ask at the hotel if you want help with those.

In the evening, come back to the hotel for dinner at Seasons or on the Outdoor Deck. The hotel's own homepage guest comments talk about live music during dinner, which makes the evening meal feel less rushed. If you have a second day, Bhimtal and Sattal are the quieter lakes nearby, and both are calmer than Naini Lake. Keep one day free if you can, so you are not rushing from place to place.

Location

Where it is, and what is near

Nainital is a lake town in the Kumaon hills. Naini Lake sits at its centre, with Mall Road running along the water and the town rising up the slopes on both sides. Most of what visitors come for — boating, the Mall, the temples and the viewpoints — is within a short walk or drive of the lake.

Naina Devi Temple stands on the lake's north shore, and the Mall Road promenade of shops and eateries runs along the water. Above the town, Snow View Point and Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat) give wide views over the lake and the hills. Bhimtal and Sattal, quieter lakes a short drive away, are the usual second-day trip.

Getting here

How to reach the hotel

From Delhi, the road runs flat to Haldwani on NH-9, then climbs into the hills to Nainital. The Delhi to Nainital drive is about 258 km. Start early in summer, and expect slow traffic on the climb at weekends.

The nearest railway station is Kathgodam, about 35 km from Nainital, and the nearest airport is Pantnagar, about 70 km away. Tallital bus stand is about 3 km from the lake area. From Kathgodam or Pantnagar, the rest of the journey is by taxi up the hill road.

Your Cheapcab driver knows the Nainital road well. Tell him your hotel name — the Ayarpatta and Mallital hotels sit on different sides of the lake, and the approach roads differ.

Best time

Best time to visit Nainital

March to June is the most popular time in Nainital, with pleasant days and cool evenings. October and November are clear and quiet, and good for views. Winter brings cold nights, and the higher ridges can see snowfall.

July to September is the monsoon. The hills turn green, but rain can slow the roads and hide the views. If you travel in the monsoon, keep your plans flexible.

Good to know

Before you book

Nainital sits at about 2,000 metres, so evenings are cool even in summer. Carry a light jacket through the year, and warm clothes in winter.

Mall Road is a walking promenade in the evenings. Cars do not go everywhere in the town centre, so expect a short walk from the taxi drop to some hotels.

Weekend traffic on the climb from Haldwani is real. An early start from Delhi makes the drive much easier.

The hotel's own room page says some Superior Rooms have bay windows and others have private balconies, so the view depends on the room you get. If a balcony or a view matters to you, ask the hotel when you book.
